This page provides some solutions for issues that may occur while using the annotation tool.

Connection problems

If you are having internet connectivity issues, it will not be possible to use the annotation tool.

What is happening

You can tell if this is happening if you start seeing errors like the following.

What to do

  • Do a hard-refresh of the page. This will often clear any one-off problems that may have occurred. Note: you will lose any unsubmitted annotations. To do this:
    • On a Mac: Command-Shift-R
    • On a PC: Ctrl-Shift-R
  • Check your internet is still connected (your WiFi is turned on, your ethernet is plugged in etc).
  • Check your internet connection by visiting another reliable website in another tab eg Google. If you're unable to load that either, then you will need to troubleshoot your internet connection by contacting your system administrator, or internet service provider, or you can try again later.

"Deleting" historic annotations

What is happening

Sometimes there are annotations back further in your assessment history that you want to remove.

These are not annotations belonging to the latest assessment, which is the assessment at the top of the history panel and what you see by default in the annotation tool. These are annotations belonging to an assessment further back in your history, which you can see by clicking an earlier entry in your history panel.

For example: if the latest assessment is by an AI pipeline, and the previous assessment was by a human, you may want to use the older human assessment. However if the human assessment has included an extra polygon by mistake, you may wish to delete that polygon.

You can't delete the old annotation - Highlighter keeps a full history. But you can create a whole new assessment, without that annotation.

What to do

"Deleting" a historic annotation can be done as follows:

  • In the history panel in the bottom-right, click the assessment containing the annotation you want to delete
  • Still in the history panel, click the clone button. This will create a copy of that assessment and place it at the top of your history
  • Select the offending annotation by clicking it in the main pane, or in the annotations list on the right
  • Delete the annotation by hitting the delete key, or clicking its bin icon in the annotation list (see image below)
  • Click the submit button on the bottom right

This creates a new latest assessment with the desired changes.

Clearing checked-out files

What is happening

Working in the annotation tool checks out files

While working with human assessment stages in the annotation tool, you may find that different users see different batches of files.

This is because, if the human assessment stage has been set as lockable (which they are by default), a batch of 10 files at a time is 'checked-out' or locked by a user when they load that stage. This is to prevent different users working on the same files at the same time, which would mean one user would end up submitting their changes on top of the changes of the other user.

However, this means sometimes you may find you can't access some of the files in your queue. You will know this is the case if it reaches the end of the queue in the annotation tool, but your human assessment stage has some files still remaining on the human assessment stage list page.

Locked or 'checked-out' files expire after 2 hours. However sometimes you may want to access the files before that.

What to do

Unlock remaining files on a Human Assessment Stage page

To unlock remaining files, visit your human assessment stage page where you can click the 'Unlock Remaining' button in this panel in the top-right.

Unlock remaining files on Process page

You can also do this from your process page where on the 'Stage Definition' tab you will see the 'Human File Assessments' panel, where you can also click the 'Unlock Remaining' button next to the relevant queue.
